“Documentaries are not just the mere reflection of realities”
said Mai Masri, Palestinian director in conversation with Bina Paul, Kerala
State Chalchitra Academy Vice-Chair Person on behalf of the 10th
edition of International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala. ”It is the mesmerization of reality that gets
a celluloid platform via documentaries. Documentary should address contemporary
issues rather than sticking to the script “stated Masri.
Documentary directors are the preservers of tradition and
memory. The truth of Palestine which history books hesitate to tell are brought
to a wider audience with the help of internet and other digital technology via
documentaries and this helps in the democratization of the documentaries. As the
Palestine government don’t give any kind of financial support, films are
produced with the help of Middle East countries. The co operative effort with
foreign countries in production plays a prominent role in the distribution of
films. Like India, Palestine also follows strict censorship laws. Don’t be
afraid of any government in revealing the truth. She also revealed that she created
many documentaries while staring death in the eye. Five films of hers are being
screened in the Filmmaker in Focus category.
